Al
Whittle – Head of Rotary
Al joined the Army as an aircraft engineer before completing the army pilots
course in 1985. He then spent his first tour in Germany, Canada and Northern
Ireland as a reconnaissance pilot.
Following his graduation as a QHI, he taught Lynx and Gazelle conversions at the School of Army Aviation as well as completing two seasons in the Blue Eagles Display Team before moving back to Germany to deploy on the first Gulf War, during which he was awarded a Commander British Forces commendation for valuable services.
On his return, he upgraded to A2 category as a QHI and joined the Senior Flying Instructors department in HQ UKLF, which saw him develop TTPs (Tactics, Techniques and Procedures) and training programmes for Army Aviation Special Forces operations worldwide.
He was then selected to command the Army’s flight of Lynx helicopters in support of the UK Special Forces which allowed him to further develop maritime, jungle, arid and mountainous TTPs, whilst deploying on Operations to Bosnia and Kosovo, as well as major exercises worldwide.
Awarded the MBE for services to aviation in the Millennium New Years Honours list, he moved to the USA and trained on the American AH-64A Apache before returning to the UK to fly and instruct on the UK Longbow variant. During this time he was part of a small team responsible for the verification of industry courseware and designing and writing the Apache Conversion-to-Type course. He also liaised with industry as an SME for the UK CATT (Combined Arms Tactical Trainer) programme.
He then moved on to become a founder member of the Air Manoeuvre Training and Advisory Team (AMTAT) and was responsible for the design and writing of the Apache Conversion-to-Role programme for both simulation and live operations, as well as specialising as the Senior EWO responsible for EW tactics.
He subsequently became the United Kingdom Senior Flying Instructor on Apache, responsible to the JHC (Joint Helicopter Command) for all training matters. He also took on the role as SME to the highly successful ACTT programme, liaising with international simulator and software designers to ensure that the end-product remained customer-focussed and viable. The defining point on this tour was an operational deployment to Afghanistan where it was particularly gratifying to see that all the tactics he had helped to develop had proven to be extremely effective.
His last tour in the Army, before joining Inzpire, saw him take command of the Apache Conversion Squadron at Middle Wallop where he was able to redefine elements of the training to focus on the operational needs of the Field Army.
