David
Rees - Principal Consultant Maritime Air
David “Dai” Rees served in the Royal Navy as an Observer for 26
years. His operational tours were in the AEW role, flying in Gannet AEW
aircraft from fixed wing aircraft carriers. He spent his final operational
tour as the Senior Observer/Executive Officer of a Squadron. During this
period, he also served as the Deputy AEW Leader on Shackleton AEW aircraft
with 8 Squadron RAF and completed an exchange tour with the USN in San Diego
as the E-2 Hawkeye Training Officer. After a tour as Operations Officer
3, HMS ARK ROYAL, David attended the RAF Staff Navigation Course and also qualified
as an Air Electronic Warfare Instructor. His next job was the Air Electronic
Trials Officer to Flag Officer Naval Air Command. In addition to undertaking
avionic equipment trials, he was also the head of Air EW Instructor training. He
then joined the Nimrod AEW Procurement Office as the maritime expert. After
graduating from the RN Staff College he became the Maritime Staff Officer,
NAEW Cell, SACEUR responsible for NATO E-3A maritime plans and policy. On
return to UK he was appointed Staff Officer Intelligence to Flag Officer Third
Flotilla.
David retired from the RN in 1987, but continued a close liaison as an Aerospace and Maritime consultant. Working for the MWC, he provided operational analysis for the tactical development of the Sea King AEW (SKASaC) helicopter in the battlespace management, air/maritime/land surveillance and C2 roles. He has excellent knowledge of maritime operations including Force Protection and Projection requirements. This knowledge has been gained during regular worldwide deployments. In 2006, he was in the Middle East with the UK Operational Carrier Battle Group, supporting Effects Based Warfare responses to asymmetric situations and in the USA supporting SKASaC/J-Stars cooperation. He has also been involved with ISTAR and TST littoral operations, including investigations into IDM/Link 16 integration. As part of his participation in Maritime Security Operations, he provided assessments of littoral operations against Fast Inshore Attack Craft. David has recently been part of a European research programme FP7 bid on maritime surveillance and security. He has also worked on Information Exchange Requirements for CVF/JSF/MASC and advised on maritime applications for Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) vehicles.
