Paul Mason - Head of Rotary
Division
Paul Mason joined the Coldstream Guards 1986 and served in Cyprus, Africa and
Northern Ireland as a Section Commander. During his tour as an Infantry
commander, Paul qualified as a special weapons instructor, tactics instructor,
range conducting officer, air defence instructor and heavy machine gun instructor. Paul
then joined the Amy Air Corps to become an army pilot and flew Lynx anti-tank
(TOW) helicopters in Bosnia and Germany, as well as commanding the Lynx MK7 in
the troop carrying, surveillance and SF role in Northern Ireland anti terrorist
operations. As a Qualified Helicopter Instructor (QHI) Paul graduated
from the Apache (AH64) Aircraft Qualification Course (AQC) in 1999 and become
the UK Apache AH MK1 Weapons Officer. As the Squadron Weapons Officer with
673 Sqn AAC at the School of Army Aviation (SAAvn) Paul wrote the Apache helicopters
weapons qualification requirements, weapons employment and techniques manual,
and weapons operating and emergency procedures. After his tour with SAAvn,
Paul spent 3 years as the Senior Weapons Officer with the Air Manoeuvre Training
and Advisory Team (AMTAT). Paul was part of a small team that wrote the entire
combat ready syllabus for the AH programme, from flight training through to live
firing qualification. During his 3 years with AMTAT Paul was responsible
for delivering Weapons, Tactics, Electronic Warfare and Sensor employment training
to Apache crews as well as air combat tactics and flying techniques in preparation
for combat ready qualification and subsequent deployment to Afghanistan. Paul
also scoped, developed and subsequently instructed on the Apache Helicopter Weapons
Instructors (AHWI) course and the Field Deployable Simulator Instructor (FDSI)
course. These courses were developed to qualify military instructors in
order to sustain standards and operational readiness levels for attack helicopter
(Combat Ready) crews. During 2004 Paul conducted live firing trials
of the AGM 114 K – Hellfire Missile at BATUS ranges in Canada. For
his contribution to the AH programme Paul was awarded a commanders certificate
for meritorious service in the 2004 birthday honours. Paul retired from
the Army in 2006 following 21 years of service during which time he flew over
2500hrs the majority of which were flown in armed anti-tank or attack helicopters.
