Torsten
Hossle – Principal Consultant Tactical
Air Transport
Torsten Hossle joined the RAF in 1985 as a University Cadet at Oxford. On
completion of flying training he joined 32 Sqn flying the HS125 in the VIP
and communications role across Europe, North America and the Middle East. Particular
highlights of the tour included operational deployments to the Gulf and Kurdistan. A
brief tour in Ops Sqn at RAF Lyneham followed, where, as the Senior Ops Controller,
Torsten introduced new computerised flight planning and tasking systems to
the Sqn. Thereafter, came the first of many tours on the Hercules. Initially
at LXX Sqn, Torsten flew the Hercules K in all the strategic and tactical
Air Transport roles. Although specialising in the Airfield Assault
role using night formation tactics, Torsten also qualified in AAR and all
aspects of stores and personnel parachute delivery. As a co-pilot,
he represented the RAF in the International Airlift Competition at McChord
AFB, USA. As a Captain, he led multi-crew tactical exercises in Canada,
USA and Botswana as well as operational deployments in the Falkland Islands,
Sierra Leone and the Balkans.
Posted to the Hercules Operational Evaluation Unit in 2001 Torsten was fully engaged in developing the tactical data link, enhanced night vision system and DAS of the UOR Hercules Mk3a programme. This included all aspects of the development process from concept definition with industry, to trials and subsequent front line training delivery. On promotion to Squadron Leader he joined the Middle East Operations Team in the Permanent Joint HQ as the principal Air Transport Advisor, leading the establishment of the inter and intra theatre air bridge hub at Al Udeid AFB. Torsten also developed a niche role as the ISTAR advisor to DCJO (Ops), in particular linking operational imagery requirements with development of the Watchkeeper and Desert Eagle UAVs. In 2005 he returned to Lyneham where he served as the CO of the Air Transport and Air to Air Refuelling Operational Evaluation Unit, flying the new Hercules J. With operational deployments in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Torsten has driven the development of enhanced precision aerial delivery and platform survivability. He has additionally focussed on developing the mission systems and cargo delivery systems of the Airbus A400M by leading the OEU’s role as RAF SMEs, in particular by establishing the tactical development milestones and the synthetic training requirements. Torsten continues to apply the experience of 4000 hours in tactical aviation to enhance operational and industry capability.
