The tablet was requried to rapidly inform air support assets of the position of ground forces in contact with the enemy. Inzpire secured this contract - which started on 31 Oct 2010 - through competitive tender against major defence giants and was soon delivering the system to enhance Tornado GR4 and Apache operations.
Prior to the requirement for DIGIMAP (pictured above), Inzpire had already identified an opportunity to leverage the ‘tablet and App revolution’ championed by Apple, for use in the military cockpit. In fact, our software architect, Jake Romanowski had already developed an early concept whilst he was a WSO on F111s in Australia. Airlines were also using these new devices for relatively simple tasks in the form of Electronic Flight Bags majoring on removing the vast quantities of paper that they were mandated to carry. Inzpire saw tablets as being able to do far more for the military than this, particularly when most military cockpits in this era didn’t even have a digital moving map! Augmenting the shortfalls of aircraft avionics with a COTS cockpit tablet with mission Apps integrated into a powerful mapping engine became the concept for our new product, “GECO”, an anagram for the Graphical Electronic Cockpit Organiser.
Following the success of DIGIMAP we continued to develop further Apps for GECO at quite a rate, delivering safety benefits such as obstacle and terrain warning, and we connected the system to external sensors such as AIS (Automated Identification System) that all went into frontline military service.
We had created a new product for the military cockpit, the GECO tablet, something quite unique but if we were to major in the mainstream military Mission Support System market we needed to also develop a complementary Ground based Mission Planning System too (GECO MPS for laptop and desktop) to complete the mission cycle. The MPS was designed to integrating mission planning, mission rehearsal and post-mission debrief. We developed this and won the RAF Puma contract, our first full MSS contract.
GECO has evolved from solving one mission need in Afghanistan to becoming the go to Mission Support System with a full suite of solutions which is configurable for all aircraft types and mission needs. GECO is extensively fielded as a common system across multiple aircraft types as well as to individual platforms across the world.
