Technical and Strategic Services OBU
Let us start with a bit of recent history, future plans and current context.
On 6 April 2020, the Division formally known as the Integrated Sensors and Systems (ISS) Division was subsumed into the newly formed Technical and Strategic Services (TSS) Operational Business Unit (OBU), which still doesn’t quite capture the breadth or depth of activities that the OBU is involved with, but is definitely a step in the right direction.
Five years ago, when Jim Mulholland - the head of the OBU - joined the ISS team, he was the seventh member and since then the team has grown by 650% to start the new financial year at 45 people. As we stand today, we’ve just had another two people join with another two joining over the coming months. The new OBU structure will allow TSS to continue to expand and in doing so, offer increased opportunities for people to join the company and enable increased personal growth within.
Under the new OBU structure, TSS has two distinct pillars – Technical Services, and Strategic, Information & Data Services, which over the coming years will see other pillars joining them as the TSS area grows. We will continue to expand our horizons in line with the company strategy of moving into other areas outside of Defence and into more overseas markets; as part of that expansion the company is already looking at what packages we could offer to people working overseas and how we can continue to provide the right level of support to them, as we really do put our people first and foremost. We even have our first person in the company permanently working under contract overseas in the USA.
As usual, we continue to attract the very best people who have chosen to finish their military careers and are looking for exciting new opportunities to use their significant experience and specialised qualifications. The latest TSS strategy will see us try and successfully move into new areas of business and recruit from non-traditional Inzpire recruitment pools, including people joining Inzpire straight from education - especially individuals with a STEM background. For the latest opportunities within TSS, and indeed within the whole of Inzpire, visit our careers page.
The challenges forced on us by the recent Covid-19 pandemic have led to us all learning to work from home and adapting to the changing requirements and working practices of our customers. We have embraced these changes as an opportunity to develop new ways of working, including virtual inductions for the two new members of the team, and adopting ways of ‘smart working’, rather than ‘remote working’. We still have some way to go towards a pandemic work-life-balance-efficiency-nirvana, but we are learning and evolving all the time as we move increasingly closer to working in a productive and asynchronous manner. We are going through this change whilst maintaining a presence with the customer on many of our contracts and ensuring that we are there to provide our high quality support when required.
Hopefully, that has provided some background for you, and throughout the rest of the week we will focus on some of the main areas in which the OBU is involved to give you a greater insight into what TSS actually does, and also cover the areas that we are currently developing for future work.
