The Wall
However, I was able to draw strength from running with Jim and Alex and we kept going together as a team, knowing that none of us was going to give up on the hundreds of people who had sponsored us. That teamwork was invaluable over the last 25 miles which were a real painful slog, but we knew it was nothing compared to the challenges faced by those being helped by our inspirational charities.

The other ‘stand out memory’ was the small but wonderfully uplifting acts of kindness from the local population along the route who, without fail, were incredibly supportive, clapping and offering a timely ‘well done’ as we passed. In particular, with a long night still ahead of us, as we arrived at Ferry Landings near Ovingham, we passed a homemade sign advertising ‘the best pitstop’ ahead. A hundred meters further down the road was a young lad who, along with his mum and dad, had set up a table and was offering everyone free slices of orange, fruit and fresh water. He was incredibly proud of what he had created and was genuinely pleased to be helping the runners who were staggering past. If there is one regret I have from the event, it is that I didn’t take a picture of that young man’s sign or get his name because he was a superb credit to his family, his community and everyone who helped us throughout the event.
While it’s still too soon to say I would do the Wall again next year, once my injuries heal I will definitely be undertaking other Ultra Marathons. And I also have some unfinished business to attend to from training – due to injury I missed running my first marathon earlier in the year, so I’ve already agreed that next April I will be running the Brighton Marathon 2017 on behalf of Combat Stress, which is a charity that I have a great affinity toward.
