We are very proud sponsors of the UK Cyber Team Competition, with the live final having taken place on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th January 2025 in Birmingham.
The event was designed to identify the best 18–25-year-olds in the country, who will go on to represent the UK in international Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions. The contest in Birmingham was the third and final stage of the process to select 30 players out of 200 individuals competing to represent the UK Cyber Team.
The competitors were formed into teams of eight and worked together to complete CTF challenges, including protecting their assets and capturing objectives in a virtual scenario.
The initiative has been implemented by the Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT), which represents the UK Government. SANS, a global leader in cybersecurity education, was selected to deliver the event, and we were delighted to sponsor such a fantastic initiative.
Steve Jones, Head of Programmes, EMEA, SANS Institute, said:
“The UK Cyber Team Competition plays a vital role in identifying and nurturing the country’s top cyber talent, and we are thrilled to have Inzpire as a partner and key contributor.
“The Inzpire team's commitment, care, and attention to detail were fundamental to the event's success. Their innovative approach to assessing soft skills and performance added a new dimension to the selection process, ensuring that the UK Cyber Team is equipped to compete at the highest level on the international stage.”
How did Inzpire contribute to the event?
We assisted in the competition by assessing the players’ soft skills alongside their individual performances in each round. We designed and developed an assessment matrix to compile both quantitative and qualitative data to aid the selection panel in their decision-making. The team will then de-brief the successful players once chosen and conduct training based around their results, alongside SANS and other elite industry partners.
27 assessors from across the industry used our assessment matrix following training from our own Don Evans, Human Factors Subject Matter Expert (SME). This training was used to inform the professional panel, who will select competitors to be part of the UK Cyber Team squad. Once selection is complete, our team members will de-brief the selected individuals on their insights and over the course of three training weekends alongside SANS and industry partners. This will help to mentor, train and hone the high performing team to compete in international CTF competitions.
Graham Basnett, Head of Cyber Division, said:
“We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting opportunity for the new up and coming cyber security talent. Being able to input to the live final, selection panel and further training of selected squad members is a privilege, and we can't wait to see them compete.”
At Inzpire, we understand that the best teams are not all neurotypical. Our diverse background within cyber division means that we have extensive experience in training and development.
