We are delighted to welcome Gareth Havis to Inzpire's collective training division as a littoral manoeuvres subject matter expert.
Following his graduation from Reading University with a degree in Sports Science, and following a period of working as a fitness instructor, Gareth joined the 2007 Young Officer Batch at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines. Following the 15-month training course he completed troop command appointments at 43 Cdo Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines, before taking advantage of a further Troop Command at a tri-service organisation. It was with this unit that he completed an Operational tour in Afghanistan, commanding a UK/Afghan Company that was deployed throughout Helmand Province. His subsequent role was as a staff officer at 3 Cdo Bde RM HQ, where he undertook a variety of roles within the Operations cell, including deploying as part of an Amphibious Task Group to the Middle East onboard HMS BULWARK.
Having been accepted for a role as an Acting Major, Gareth joined the British Military Advisory Training Team in Nigeria, working with the Nigerian School of Infantry and Kaduna Training School conducting liaison work that set the conditions for the Royal Marines and British Army Spec Infantry Group to establish a regular partnership with Nigerian forces. On completion, he moved to Naval Command Headquarters, in the augmentation cell. This office provided personnel to all the operations, exercises and ceremonial events being undertaken by the Royal Navy as well as commanding the pre-deployment training for individuals before they deployed to roles across the globe.
Having been promoted to Major, he attended ICSC(L) at the Defence Academy at Shrivenham before returning to the Commando Training Centre to run the Junior Command Course, a 12-week course designed to prepare Marines to be Section Commanders following their promotion to Corporal. With a company command beckoning in Arbroath and family circumstances that made relocation challenging, he made the difficult decision to leave the Regular Service. A year long internship with JP Morgan followed, and although extremely useful in terms of experience outside of the military, financial services wasn’t quite the right fit, so he is keen to get back into a more familiar world.
Having deployed to Afghanistan, Oman, Qatar, UAE, Nigeria, Belize, the Philippines and the US over a 12-year career, Gareth is now enjoying the time working at home with his wife Amy and 5-month-old daughter Esmé. He remains a member of the RMR and stays active through running and cycling. Outside of this he can usually be found watching almost any sport, or sipping a bizarre beer from around the world.
Welcome to the team, Gareth!
