The Wall
I (that's Head of Support Services, Rich Havercroft!) have been working hard over the last few months to change my ‘couch potato’ lifestyle with a laudable willpower to avoid the constant stream of cakes, biscuits and donuts in the office and to get out training 6 days per week.
The challenge has really been a great motivator for me. The first couple of months of were difficult as I built up a basic level of core fitness from an embarrassingly poor starting point, and I have had to overcome a painful injury, but it is starting to come together now. There have been a number of important lessons along the way – such as not trying to ramp up distances like I could when I was in my twenties; aligning my feet, knees and legs in the same direction when running (ideally the direction of travel!) and getting a proper shoe fitting from a professional running shop; but I’ve now found a combination of shoes, technique and running styles that seem to be really working for me.
Less than 2 months ago I wouldn’t have thought that I would be capable of running 100 miles injury free in just over a month – but I’m also really conscious that there is still a massive step-up required over the next 4 ½ months to be ready for the 69 miles of The Wall. Therefore my immediate focus is on successfully finishing a couple of half-marathons during February and March before completing my first full marathon, the Brighton Marathon 2016, in April. I’m running Brighton on behalf of Combat Stress, a fantastic charity that assists Service veterans who are in need of mental health support following their time in the military. Right now the charity is helping over 5,900 veterans and their families who require help to cope with a range of psychological wounds from PTSD to depression and anxiety. I care deeply about the issues Combat Stress are helping fellow veterans with, and I would encourage anyone reading this to either donate directly to the Charity (combatstress.org.uk) or to do so through my fundraising page: http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/RichHavercroft
I will continue to keep you up to date with my ongoing training throughout the build-up to The Wall.
