Human Factors
I should probably bring you up to date with what has gone before. We have been developing and delivering bespoke training to a wide range of customers for nearly 10 years and pride ourselves on our unique, inspirational and entertaining training style.
Our prime customer is the UK Military and we are proud to work in partnership with the RAF’s Central Flying School – in fact everyone entering the UK Military Flying Training system for the past 8 years has been through one of our flagship foundation training courses. Our training aims to help individuals increase their personal performance thereby enhancing team performance also. A natural by-product of this will be a reduction in error which can be costly both in lives lost and money wasted.
Outside of the military, we have trained a wide range of organisations including Formula 1 Racing Teams, Professional Football Teams, The NHS, The Oil Industry, Schoolteachers and even Farm Vets! In fact, anywhere there is a human involved, we are sure we can make a difference.
Our training covers a broad spectrum of subjects including, Error Management and Reduction; Blame Cultures; Safety Management Systems; Mental Processing; Situational Awareness; Decision Making (particularly under pressure); Resource Management; Fatigue Management; Stress Management; Communication; Leadership and Teamworking: Effective Briefing and Debriefing.
That is just a list really of what we do – seeing it in action is a whole different ball game. I use that phrase to illustrate the sort of examples we draw upon for our training. We use a lot of sporting analogies from sports such as baseball, where that particular phrase comes from. There are also inspirational examples from the Space Programme, The History of Rock Music as well as the philosophies of Bruce Lee and Martin Luther King Jr to name but a couple. Our view is that we want to tell stories as real life stories are evocative stimulating. We put a lot of our personal experiences into the training also.
As a final point, it is important to point out why our Human Factors training is different from others you might find. Many Human Factors providers will show case studies where Human Error has played the main part in an accident or incident and will state that “Humans are the weakest link in any system.” They will concentrate on the negative side of Human Factors. We think this is wrong. Humans are, by far and away, the strongest link in any system and we need to concentrate on the positives and how we can work to improve our performance. Remember that Neil Armstrong took manual control of the Lunar Module of Apollo XI when he found that the planned landing site was covered in boulders. He flew to a new site and landed with only 9 seconds of spare fuel remaining. So don’t tell me he was the weakest link in that system!
