We’re delighted to welcome James ‘Jim’ Bagshaw to our team as a maritime and anti-submarine warfare subject matter expert, following his career in the Royal Navy.
Jim joined the RN in September 1996 as a warfare officer. After initial training and Fleet Time on HM Ships Cattistock and Lancaster, he joined HMS York as an Officer of the Watch, learning core mariner skills and developing warfare understanding through deployments to the Mediterranean and Baltic.
Further sea appointments followed initially on minehunters (HM Ships Penzance and Inverness) which culminated with an appointment as staff mine warfare officer to Fleet Operational Standards and Training (FOST) and responsibility for delivery of training to UK and NATO Mine Countermeasures (MCM) units. After this, Jim returned to the ‘big ship’ world, joining HMS Cumberland following completion of the Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) course. This period saw two deployments to the Arabian Gulf as well as conducting evacuations from the Libyan port of Benghazi.
Staff appointments followed with assignment to the Maritime Battle Staff as a Current Ops planner and Fleet Ops Division as the liaison with the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ). This saw Jim’s role encompass: the design and conduct of information operations for EU Counter Piracy; deployment as a group warfare officer on the Response Force Task Group responsible for ensuring the commander’s tactical plan was delivered; and a greater understanding of the political/military space through representing the Naval Service at PJHQ.
Latterly, Jim’s career has been overseas with postings to Bahrain, as UK MCCs ASW and MCM planner which encompassed activity with US 5th Fleet. This was followed by a role as warfare instructor, focussing on ASW, at the US Navy’s Surface Warfare Officer’s School, and finally as Under Water Warfare section head with the Royal Canadian Navy, with responsibility for training design and delivery. This latter posting included periods at sea with the Canadian version of FOST.
Jim has also had sub-unit command as officer commanding P Squadron, 43 Commando. This gave him the huge privilege of commanding 160 sailors delivering a force protection role on RN and Royal Fleet Auxiliary units operating in the Middle East.
Jim is married to Natasha and lives in the East Midlands. He enjoys many sports (rugby, cricket and hiking in particular) and tries to stay active in them as much as possible. When not playing or watching sport, Jim’s other love is cooking, especially on the BBQ in almost any weather!
