Andy joins us having spent 27 years in the Royal Air Force, initially as an air movements controller and latterly a training officer.
Joining the RAF in 1996, Andy enjoyed postings on the Air Movements Squadrons of RAF Brize Norton and Akrotiri delivering load planning, cargo and passenger services for various UK operations.
In 2001, he was posted to the Defence Movements School where his passion for education was ignited. During this period, Andy completed various deployments to Iraq, Falklands (twice) and Ascension. He also completed taskings to Qatar, Singapore, Sydney, Auckland, Hawaii and Boston, delivering vital supplies to UK personnel and partner nations.
Andy applied for his commission in 2009 and successfully completed initial officer training in 2010 as a training officer where he was posted to 54 Sqn at RAF Waddington. In this post he provided Defence Training Systems subject matter expertise in developing and delivering ISTAR training for three platforms, with a significant number of hours observing crews whilst they carried out their duties in training and on exercise.
In 2012, Andy moved to the Air Warfare School expanding the modularisation of the training programme whilst developing the trainer cadre in delivery skills and student support. Within this posting, he also completed his master’s in education culminating in exploring the Troops to Teachers programme during his dissertation.
Andy was then sent to SHAPE in Belgium to provide Permanent Joint Headquarters operational and exercise training direction and guidance to UK NATO personnel based at 32 locations across Europe. He also provided planning and coordination for disaster responses to UK personnel, including leading an operation to locate all UK NATO personnel across four countries following the Brussels attacks in 2016.
A high-tempo deployment to the Middle East saw Andy carry out the Information Operations analyst role, assisting coalition and partner nation personnel with real-time operational advice and activities to senior officers. Following this deployment, he had a brief posting with the Air Mobility Force Headquarters in December 2018, before he was promoted and posted to the Defence College of Technical Training in May 2019. Although this post was disrupted by COVID, Andy provided Training Delivery Authority training design, delivery and assurance direction and guidance to four training providers executing over 740 courses.
Andy’s last posting was to the Defence Centre for Training Support, and he was responsible for the Defence Trainer Capability. During this time he successfully led a significant revision of the capability's training courses ensuring output met current and future training requirements.
Always wanting to develop himself, Andy also holds project and change management practitioner qualifications. Away from work, he has been married for 23 years to Nina and has two teenage sons. Andy’s passion is football, and he coaches a local youth team. Plus, when time allows, he is trying to improve his golf, but this is literally very hit and miss.
A warm welcome to the team, Andy!
