On Monday 23 Feb, Inzpire's Martin Hegarty (Assurance Lead) and Becki Hall (Marketing and Communications Manager) spent the day watching one of our Human Factors courses, with our expert Tug Wilson delivering Human Factors training to four RAF and two Army student pilots at the RAF College, Cranwell.
Here, Becki explains her thoughts on watching Tug's work:
"Watching Tug in action is truly inspiring; he had the students in hysterical laughter and deep, thought provoking debate in equal measures.
He provides them with an environment where they feel comfortable to open up and discuss their personal feelings and insights on progressing through their training - they can thrash out the rights and wrongs on a subject and build upon their experiences with information provided by Tug from his own career. It is easy to see why Tug is so good at his job, and to watch 6 young aviators go from passively listening to debating some extremely controversial topics in a matter of hours was truly remarkable.
The course was delivered using real life case studies both from military and civil aviation, as well as heavy industry, Formula 1 and life on front line squadrons and the students discussed and debated topics ranging from pilot error to the risks of peer pressure - and that was just day one of five!
It is fascinating to watch the thought process of the students develop as Tug tells his anecdotes; sometimes, it is not immediately evident why an example is being used; the students may be wondering why they are being asked to discuss the manner in which they drive, for instance. However, once the topic has been discussed openly and brought full circle back to the topic of aviation you can literally see the light bulbs go on as they realise they can take their experiences from every day life in to the cockpit with them. As Tug says, these moments are "golden nuggets", and it is these golden nuggets of personal realisation which are so crucial in Human Factors training.
The students will now go on to complete psychometric testing which will allow Tug to deliver the course with examples and information tailored for their individual personality types, before discussing Human Factors such as stress, fatigue and - perhaps most importantly of all - how to banter your Squadron boss without getting in trouble!"
