The challenge

RAF Astra is responsible for driving safe and secure digital innovation across the Royal Air Force. Operating in a highly regulated environment, the organisation recognised that it needed to adopt a robust approach to identify and manage cyber risks while enabling rapid development and deployment of new digital capabilities.  It also wanted to adapt its existing processes and train personnel to be able to efficiently react to evolving threats and to support continuous innovation cycles, aligned to the UK Defence Secure by Design methodology.

With proven cyber risk management experience and an excellent reputation for tailoring our cyber security solutions to customers requirements, we were uniquely positioned to address RAF Astra's challenges.

Our approach

Our risk and resilience subject matter experts directed and supported RAF Astra and wider RAF digital innovators through their Secure by Design journey, ensuring alignment with industry recognised security frameworks (National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cyber Security Framework (CSF) V2).

We conducted a thorough analysis, reviewing RAF Astra's innovation delivery pipeline, cyber security governance policies, and personnel capabilities. This enabled us to implement new artifacts and processes and identify upskilling opportunities for personnel.

Our risk analysis mapped potential threats across its innovation lifecycle, and we created easy-to-use templates to help team members self-assess future projects. These customised templates guide personnel through various elements of the Secure by Design methodology to identify risks – scoring the impact and likelihood of each risk – and suggesting appropriate mitigations.

Crucially, we demystified cyber concepts to enable buy-in from non-technical personnel and senior responsible owners.

The Outcome

Through our support, RAF Astra now has:

  • An improved security posture by proactively addressing cyber threats during the early stages of digital innovation

  • Efficient decision-making via a standardised risk assessment process

  • Long-term resilience to evolving threats via continuous assessments

  • Cost and time savings from reduced external consultations

  • Broad understanding of cyber governance across the organisation

By collaborating with Inzpire, RAF Astra can confidently pursue digital innovation while assuring the appropriate levels of security for defence systems and information.
