The Project

In collaboration with the Multinational Helicopter Training Centre (MHTC) in Sintra, Portugal, our Helicopter Services Division instruct over 20 European nations in courses including the Helicopter Tactics Course, Helicopter Tactics Instructor Course, Electronic Warfare Course and Composite Air Operations Planning Course.

Courses range from basic to advanced helicopter tactic theory and practical missions supported by our bespoke dual helicopter simulator. Selected students attend from selected European rotary fleets and include pilots and rear crew, from those who have just completed basic flying training right through to potential tactic instructors on operational squadrons.

As part of our contract with the MHTC, our team recently helped to deliver the Helicopter Tactics Instructor Course (HTIC) No.10, providing ground instruction during the four-week ground phase at Sintra Air Base N°1, Portugal, and support to flying operations throughout the three-week flying phase at Pápa Air Base, Hungary.

The HTIC is a high-value “train the trainer” course with an established reputation for delivering tactical excellence in a multinational environment. It is a key component for sustaining the European tactics instructor community which is currently used to support both national and multinational helicopter training and exercise events.

Our Expertise

To support the successful delivery of HTIC, our subject matter experts (SMEs) have extensive experience and expertise in both operational and training environments gained from their time in the military.

The team is made up of former aircrew from the British Army and Royal Air Force and includes Qualified Helicopter Tactics Instructors, Qualified Helicopter Instructors, Qualified Helicopter Crewmen Instructors, electromagnetic warfare officers, weapons instructors, human factors instructors, flying authorisers, and unit flight supervisors.

Between them, they have thousands of hours of rotary aviation experience and decades of operational and instructional experience to draw upon.

This pedigree enables our SMEs to develop, plan, deliver and debrief realistic training to effectively meet operational objectives.

Our Approach

The ground phase of the HTIC sees the potential instructors receive theoretical lessons covering electronic warfare, COMAO, methods of instruction, helicopter tactics and more. Our rotary, fast jet, command and control, and land experts support the delivery of this training, which culminates in an intensive assessed simulator package - also supported by our rotary tactics instructors – ensuring the standard of instruction is satisfactory prior to the flying phase.

The flying phase of the HTIC sees the potential instructors take everything learnt on the ground phase into the live flying environment. This is an intensive three-week period which culminates in the award of bronze, silver or gold instructor qualification.

Throughout the flying phase, Inzpire is relied upon by the chief instructor and host nation enablers to make sure events run as smoothly as possible. We run the day-to-day operations, with tasks ranging from the correct allocation of resources for each sortie, to problem solving, deconflicting and mitigating against challenges such weather restrictions and host nation limitations.

The assets used for HTIC 10 flying phase included UH-60, EH101, CH53, H145, H225, NH90 helicopters.

The Outcome

Through our relationship with the MHTC and the successful delivery of the HTIC, we are delighted to play a significant part in improving the tactical expertise of selected European aircrew and to support multinational integration.

At the end of the course, graduates will be qualified to deliver tactical instruction during home-based and multinational training and exercises. They will also be adept in providing helicopter tactical advice to 1-Star Command level, as well as leading multi-platform COMAOs.

“Inzpire’s collaboration with the MHTC is exceptional, as their operational experience provides the crews with numerous opportunities to enhance their skills. The professionalism and expertise of Inzpire’s tactical instructors, combined with their excellent communication skills, make the learning experience seamless for course participants.”
