Inzpire’s design and delivery of an updated and realistic training scenario enables the Royal Navy’s Fleet Operational Standards and Training organisation to challenge and better train its warships’ teams.
The Royal Navy's Fleet Operational Standards and Training (FOST) organisation needed to modernise their training scenarios and operational staff work, which had not been updated in over 25 years. The existing scenarios were based on the Balkans conflict of the 1990s and no longer reflected current threats or optimised the use of modern training assets.
Our Maritime Division was selected to support this critical update, leveraging the recent RN operational experience across the team. The project began with an intensive four-day session with the FOST team to understand their requirements. This was followed by 17 engagements with frontline stakeholders across the RN and MOD to capture over 300 data points on the need to modernise the scenarios.
Two further working groups consolidated all feedback into updated scenario documents and operational staff work tailored to FOST's training needs. Our cyber, space and air experts also contributed realistic scenario hooks, to ensure a full multi-domain operational environment was reflected.
The modernised scenario – which was widely welcomed by RN and defence stakeholders - allows FOST to provide higher-end, commander-task-group-level warfighting training against peer adversary threats for UK, NATO and international warships. The updated material better prepares maritime forces for the operational challenges they may face by incorporating current and emerging threats.
We delivered the full update on time and budget, providing ongoing aftercare support. This project highlights our ability to apply operational experience and engage stakeholders to modernise critical defence training capabilities.
“This change is long overdue. I am pleased with the way my team in FOST (Ships) combined with Inzpire to develop a new, modern and contemporary strategic exercise scenario that better reflects the world we live in today and prepares our ships and those of our international partners for the operational challenges of tomorrow. This work has been a significant undertaking, conducted over several months and to an excellent standard.”
