Inzpire designed a catalogue of tactical scenarios for the Royal Navy to support its SPARTAN synthetic training vision.
The Royal Navy’s Fleet Operational Standards and Training (FOST) organisation was seeking more cost-effective and flexible options for training its frontline warships. The use of live assets for training exercises was constrained by availability, cost and the inability to accurately replicate diverse threat platforms. The onboard training (OBT) system, integrated into combat management systems across destroyers, frigates and aircraft carriers, offered a potential solution through synthetic tracking. However, there was limited understanding of how to fully utilise its capabilities across the Navy.
Our Maritime Division possesses unique expertise, having one of the only specialists across UK maritime defence with the required knowledge to create and develop advanced OBT scenarios. This, combined with our team’s deep understanding of Royal Navy tactics, procedures and threat behaviours, meant we were uniquely positioned to provide realistic synthetic training environments.
Our subject matter experts developed an initial catalogue of tactical scenarios with increasing complexity for use in South Coast exercise areas. This included three distinct threat order of battles, and a Strait of Hormuz scenario tailored for Type 23 frigates, Type 45 destroyers and Queen Elizabeth-Class aircraft carriers. Additionally, we created dynamic OBT scenarios to enhance Exercise Sharpshooter for all capable units.
Our OBT scenarios have been widely adopted by the Royal Navy's frontline ships and training staff. They enable advanced training to continue even when defects prevent participation in live at-sea exercises. For Sharpshooter, our contribution instigated new levels of realism and complexity unachievable through live assets alone. Overall, this OBT solution represents a key step towards the Navy's SPARTAN vision of integrated synthetic training across multiple platforms.
