On 28th February, we celebrated the 10th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science by hosting an exciting day of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) activities for John Blow Primary School in Collingham.
28 female students in years 5 and 6 from attended the Air Battlespace Training Centre (ABTC) at RAF Waddington. They got to ‘fly’ flight simulators used by the military, participate in an aircraft building workshop, and received some short talks from inspirational women in the aerospace industry.
Kelly Bindemann, Gladiator Operations Manager at Inzpire, said:
“We were thrilled to host the event again this year. The students were a credit to John Blow Primary School; bright, engaged and enthusiastic. The girls rose to all the aviation-themed challenges and STEM activities - we certainly had some potential pilots in the group!
“I need to send a big thank you to the whole team from several different organisations who helped set up the activities and equipment and helped the day run so smoothly.
“We are passionate about making the science and tech industry a more inclusive and inviting profession for women and girls of all backgrounds. We hope that through events like this, we can promote the aspirations of the younger generation for many years to come.”
Kelly and her coworkers organised the event in collaboration with military colleagues, JD2E and Boeing Defence UK (BDUK). The aim of the day is to celebrate female contributions to science, raise awareness of the opportunities in STEM careers to girls in their early years, and to reinforce the message that it is all within their reach.
Ellie Hollingsworth, Group Leader from John Blow Primary School said:
“What a fantastic day we had on our trip! The children thoroughly enjoyed every moment, but the highlight was undoubtedly the time spent in the simulators, where they had a go at flying planes. It was such a joy watching their faces light up with excitement as they took control of the cockpit!
“Beyond the fun and games, we also delved into the lives of incredible women working in STEM. They shared their inspiring journeys, detailing the challenges they faced and how they carved out their careers. It was truly eye-opening for the girls, sparking a real interest in what lies ahead for them.
“We believe these experiences are invaluable, as they help the girls see the vast array of roles and opportunities available in the future. Days like this, filled with learning and inspiration, can make a huge difference in shaping young minds!”
