Cyber Incident Exercise design and delivery
As a leading provider of palliative and end-of-life care in Lincolnshire, St Barnabas Hospice understands the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive patient data and ensuring uninterrupted IT services. Like many organisations, they face an increasing threat from cyber criminals seeking to disrupt operations and steal funds.
The National Cyber Security Centre's 2023 Cyber Threat Report revealed that 30% of UK charities were hit by cyber-attacks in the past year, with 19% suffering negative impacts on services. St Barnabas knew they needed to be prepared.
Cyber attackers are determined and resourceful. Even with robust defences in place, it's crucial for organisations to practise their incident response and business continuity plans.
We designed a tailored cyber incident tabletop exercise to pressure-test St Barnabas' ability to respond to an escalating attack by an organised crime group attempting to steal financial reserves.
The one-day exercise brought together St Barnabas' clinical, business operations and executive incident response teams. They faced a realistic scenario involving escalating and significant disruption to critical IT systems, impacting both clinical services and operations.
The St Barnabas team responded skilfully, demonstrating strong coordination and familiarity with required actions to minimise service disruption and financial losses. The exercise proved highly valuable, reinforcing existing strengths while identifying some areas for further improvement.
Mike Howarth, Head of IMT at St Barnabas Hospice, said:
"We were delighted to take part in a cyber desktop exercise led by Inzpire, designed to test our readiness and ability to respond to a major cyber incident. The sessions were not only well-organised but also engaging, ensuring everyone was involved and contributing as we worked through our command response strategies.
"Through this experience, we reinforced the strength of our current processes and business continuity plans, while also identifying a few areas for improvement. Everyone left the exercise feeling more assured and eager to apply what we’ve learned to strengthen our incident response even further.
"Most importantly, we came away with a renewed sense of confidence in our ability to manage a major incident, should it ever arise.”
All customer feedback was rated 'excellent' across the board.
