We’re delighted to announce that Inzpire has been awarded fourth best employer of veterans across the whole of the UK, by the organisers of The British Ex-Forces in Business Awards. This adds to our success, having already secured ‘Employer of the Year’ at their 2023 award ceremony.
The Great British Employers of Veterans is the most in-depth benchmark of the top companies employing veterans and other members of the armed forces community in the UK. The programme was designed to provide veterans with a comprehensive guide to companies in which they can build a meaningful second career with, while being fully supported.
For 2024, the judging panel consisted of 20 veterans who have gone on to forge successful second careers within their respective firms.
We pride ourselves in offering fantastic opportunities to veterans once their serving career has come to an end. Approximately 80% of our workforce is made up of veterans, with 30 reservists from across all three services – equating to 9% of our current total employees. Throughout 2023 alone, we recruited an additional 70 veterans to our team.
We're very proud to be recognised alongside some fantastic companies, including Balfour Beatty, Amazon, BAE Systems, Centrica and Babcock International, to name just a few. The full list of winners can be viewed here.
Here’s how we support veterans in their next career move
Leaving the military can be a major step for individuals, and therefore we frequently speak with those considering leaving the forces to provide informal, honest and impartial advice.
We can make job offers up to 12 months in advance to allow service leavers to have complete peace of mind, prior to submitting their termination request. We also run various ‘Expression of Interest’ recruitment campaigns to build a talent pool for future roles and have recently signed up to the RAF ‘Managed Path Scheme’.
To assist ex-forces personnel through resettlement, we provide civilian workplace attachments, allowing serving personnel experience of a commercial environment. During this time, our HR team is available to provide guidance and support, ranging from CV writing to mock interviews, to help service leavers hone their skills.
Our culture
With over 80% of our workforce being ex-military, we embody the values and culture of our armed forces customers – all while celebrating the skills and contributions brought by our colleagues with a non-military background.
To enable our veterans to continue their professional development, we offer opportunities through professional qualifications, internal and external courses, and self-directed study. This helps our individuals to enhance their knowledge and skills, while preparing for internal opportunities and promotion within our business.
To make the transition from the armed forces into civilian life as seamless as possible, we offer both private medical and dental care to all our people, from day one of employment. We also have a team of 30 Mental Health First Aiders to be the first point of contact, in complete confidence, for anyone who may be experiencing emotional distress.
We will always support our colleagues to achieve a great work-life balance, and regularly organise team building activities, wellbeing events and celebrations of our successes with the whole team – without any need to make up the time.
John Newall (pictured above), Maritime Operations Subject Matter Expert, joined Inzpire following a successful career in the Royal Navy. He said:
"With all things you need to consider when preparing to leave the Armed Forces, I think one of the most important things is the values and ethos of the company you want to work for the next step in your career. Choosing an organisation that works for you is absolutely vital. I chose Inzpire because I felt that it was not only the best place for me, but also for my family too.
“Now that I’m nine months in, I’m certain that I made the right decision. The support I’ve had from the people around me has been awesome. I really love my role within Inzpire, and I feel that my transition from service to civilian life has been seamless.”
We also support those who wish to continue their service as a reserve
With such a strong military heritage, it is inevitable that many of our employees wish to continue to serve and we actively encourage this. We provide an extra 15 days paid leave each year to conduct reservist duties and coordinate a keeping-in-touch plan with employees and their families if deployed.
We have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and pledge to support the armed forces community during periods of deployment, relocation and upheaval caused by military service. Line Managers take this into account when considering any flexible working requests, as in some circumstances it may be appropriate to consider informal requests for temporary change resulting from the demands of service life.
Our Head of Human Resources, Dave Garraghty, said:
“Military heritage runs deep within our DNA; veterans are welcomed into an organisation with goals, values and a culture that closely aligns with their past experiences and the elements they enjoyed most about service life.
“Without veterans, there simply wouldn’t be an Inzpire. To be ranked at number four by the British Employers of Veterans in 2024 is amazing recognition for our employees, and a fitting testimonial to all of the work done to attract the very best service leavers to the company.”
