Girls explore their passion for tech at the CyberFirst Girls Competition North West Regional Final
Inzpire recognises that women are tech trailblazers. So, to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS), we look closely at how Inzpire is encouraging women of all backgrounds into the profession, by offering various employment opportunities within the tech industry. As the demand for science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) skills skyrocket, Inzpire is proactive in ensuring that women do not miss out.
Over and above supporting the significant roles that women already play in technology, we actively promote the idea of STEM careers to future generations of women. One recent opportunity being Saturday 4 February 2023, when our Cyber Division volunteered their support at the CyberFirst Girls Competition North West Regional Final with HOST Salford. This was part of the company’s social value plan and to provide encouragement to the girls that there are real opportunities for women in tech.
Junior Cyber Exercise Planner Yasmin Ahmad attended the competition on behalf of Inzpire. She said: "After seeing the standard of participation on the day, it’s clear we need to do everything in our power to encourage young girls to consider rewarding and versatile careers in cyber security. I have no doubt that these girls could go on to make a positive impact on the world, by helping to keep our cyberspace a safe and secure environment to live and work.”
We aim to raise awareness to girls in their early lives that a career in tech is a viable option and we are firm in the belief that more should be done to encourage STEM at a school level. Through providing first-hand accounts from our employees at events such as the CyberFirst competition, we hope to debunk the myth that tech is a career just for men. We believe this is a crucial steppingstone for building the narrative that women and girls are vital for changing the world and we need them as our future leaders.
A teacher in attendance said: “It has been a fantastic way to show the girls that career choices do not have to be so black and white, that they can be anything they want to be and that they can think outside of the box when it comes to their careers. There is a world of opportunities out there for them, including in tech.”
The CyberFirst Girls Competition North West Finalists
In terms of the Cyber Division at Inzpire, women already make up 19% of our specialists. This figure is marked against the 26% of women which currently make up the UK’s tech industry. We are working on the understanding that we do not need to change our standards to recruit female employees, but we are seeking to change the way we advertise roles to ensure they appeal to everyone equally.
Whilst Inzpire has already moved the needle in terms of female recruitment, we are pushing for a further female recruitment drive, in line with the digital revolution, on the acknowledgement that women and girls represent half of the world’s population and, therefore, they have half of its potential. Inzpire is working in accordance with UNESCO’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a bold commitment to “leave no one behind.” Not only are we at the forefront of challenging intersecting inequalities in terms of recruitment, but we are also advocates for women to take up top-level positions within the company and retaining top female talent.
And it is not only our cyber team pulling out all the stops to celebrate this year’s IDWGIS. Our Collective Training Division are to host year 6 girls from a local primary school at the Air Battlespace Training Centre at RAF Waddington, where they will be able to experience flight simulators and hear from inspirational women working in the aerospace industry. Look out for more details on this soon!
At Inzpire, we aim to be a strong role model for girls to pursue their passion in tech and are working hard to close the digital gender inequality gap across the sector as innovators and visionaries. Read about our wider commitments to STEM here.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a global celebration of the women who work and contribute to the major scientific findings that we see daily, in the past and future. The celebration allows us to honour women’s major achievements in technology and emphasises the need for women and girls to enter STEM careers. The day of recognition of women in STEM careers was implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, to promote the full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.
