We are delighted to welcome Adrian 'Ady' Hempsell to Inzpire.
Ady joins us as a maritime operations and synthetic training subject matter expert straight from BAE systems where he spent the last 13 years running the Maritime Composite Training System. Prior to that he served for 19 years as a Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy following a not-so-standard career path!
Following graduation from the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in 1991 and sea training time onboard HMS STARLING in Hong Kong and then HMS LONDON, he was appointed as the Gunnery Officer of HMS CROMER, one of the first Sandown Class minehunters, where he spent just short of 2 years. This was followed by an exchange position with the French Navy at their Ecole Naval, the French equivalent to BRNC, where he was a Divisional Officer to 30 cadets.
2 years later he returned to the UK where he was appointed as the Navigator of HMS WESTMINSTER which saw him deploying to the East Coast of the States followed by 7 months in the Middle and Far East.
Following this sea time he spent 6 months on operational duty as part of the UK contingent of the US led NATO Staff in Sarajevo working in the Media Operations cell, a far cry from navigating a frigate!
In late 1999 he again returned to the UK where, after completing staff course and the Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) course, he joined HMS SOMERSET as the PWO responsible for Above Water Warfare. 2 years later he joined the staff of Flag Officer Sea training (FOST) as one of the Above Water Warfare staff officers delivering training to RN as well as NATO and sometimes non-NATO navies.
His time at FOST was followed by a relatively short 12 month stint on the staff of the Commander UK Maritime Forces before being appointed as Commanding Officer of HMS WALNEY (another Sandown class Minehunter). Having gone full circle in terms of appointments, this was his last in the RN before leaving in 2008 and joining BAE Systems.
Ady lives in Plymouth with his wife and 3 dogs, and has 2 daughters who have already fled the nest!
Welcome to Inzpire, Ady!
