We’re delighted to welcome Gerry Doyle to our Space division following 37 years of service in the Royal Air Force.
Gerry was born and raised in North-east Scotland and joined the RAF as a pilot in 1981 having undertaken a degree in computational science at the University of St Andrews. After completion of flying training, he was posted to the Nimrod MR fleet where he spent four years as co-pilot, first pilot and crew captain. He then trained as a Qualified Flying Instructor on Bulldog aircraft (which he had flown as a student while at St Andrews) and spent six years instructing on Birmingham and Cambridge University Air Squadrons. His final flying tour was as a flight commander on the E-3D Sentry (AWACS) fleet at RAF Waddington.
He then completed a variety of staff tours relating to AWACS (at Permanent Joint Headquarters) and flying training (including early involvement in UK Military Flying Training System). He attended Cambridge University as a CAS Fellow to complete an MPhil in International Relations then spent three years in Washington DC as a member of the British Defence Staff-United States (BDS-US) Joint Staff. Returning to the UK, he spent four years at the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre at Shrivenham, where as desk officer for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and space, his involvement with military applications of space began to mature. He wrote the UK Military Space Primer, participated in two U.S. Air Force (USAF) Schriever wargames, and undertook other air and space doctrine, concepts and futures activities.
Gerry then spent two years in London as the executive officer (XO) at the Royal College of Defence Studies. His last five years in regular service were at RAF High Wycombe working in capability development and delivery for air systems, on concept test activities, and latterly in space capability delivery. Along the way, the Royal Air Force also sponsored a part-time PhD at Reading University where he completed a thesis on Bernard Schriever and early USAF aspirations for military spaceflight.
He retired as a regular RAF officer in 2019 after 37 years of service, though he retains a reserve commitment supporting UK Space Command. He worked for Raytheon UK for two years as a programme manager, followed by a year with BAE Digital Intelligence as a technical consultant.
Gerry is married to Claire, who is a community nurse in the NHS; they have an adult son Hugh, who currently works as an events manager. They live in Berkshire, where Gerry is a regular parkrun participant (contemplating attempting a half-marathon in 2023!), a keen jazz fan and beginner saxophonist, and an enthusiastic amateur astronomer.
Welcome to the team, Gerry!
