Mark joined the RAF as a University Cadet in 1989, graduating from Nottingham University with a 2:1 History degree in Jul 93 before completing Initial Officer Training at RAF College Cranwell Oct 93 - Apr 94. Qualifying as an Intercept Controller in Dec 95, he served in this capacity during tours at RAF Buchan and No.1 Air Control Centre (ACC). In Apr 00 he was posted to RAF Waddington as an E-3D Weapons Controller, where he served with No. 8 Sqn during OP ORACLE/VERITAS (Nov 01-Jan 03) and OP TELIC Phase 1 (Apr-Jun 03). In between these tours Mark attended the Aircrew Instructor Course at CFS Cranwell. Following this he was selected for training as an E-3D Fighter Allocator and was posted to No. 23 Sqn. In Jul 06 Mark participated in Op HIGHBROW, the Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation responsible for evacuating EU citizens from the Lebanon during the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict.
Promoted in Feb 08, he was posted back to No.1 ACC as OC Ops & Trg Sqn. Mark served 2 tours as Det Cdr for the No.1 ACC Det Afghanistan. After being offered an opportunity to branch out, from Jun 10 – Jul 12 Mark was SO2 Space at the Air Warfare Centre Cranwell. In this role he was responsible for the delivery of space warfare education across UK Defence at various levels. In Jul 12 Mark volunteered for the SO2 J7 role at NATO Joint Force Command HQ in the Netherlands, where he served on the team responsible for scheduling, coordinating and delivering Pre Deployment Training for HQ International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), ISAF Joint Command and the Regional Commands.
Mark was promoted to Wing Commander and selected for No. 17 Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC) in Sep 13. Following completion of ACSC, and the associated MA in Defence Studies, Mark was assigned as SO1 for the newly established Op Training Centre at RAF Leeming. Responsible for Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) and NATO Tactical Evaluation, the Op Training Centre oversaw a complete review and refresh of EAW Training, culminating the award of Full Operating Capability in Dec 15, and an AOC 1 Gp Team Commendation in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in Jun 16.
Mark’s final tour in the RAF was as a National Representative in the National Air Defence Operations Centre at RAF High Wycombe, holding Tactical Command of the UK’s Air Counter Terrorism Operation.
