Stephen Atkinson (Steve) joins us as a junior cyber security consultant, a career change following over 15 years in the Royal Air Force.
Steve’s military career as an aerospace systems operator began in 2008, where after basic and trade training, he formed part of the team delivering Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) operations for UK air defence alongside routine Ground-controlled Interception training, at RAF Boulmer. Following a tour in the Falklands, he was posted to RAF Waddington, which saw him leading the support intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance operations with 51 Squadron (Sqn) on Op Shader in Qatar; 8 Sqn in Torrejon, Spain; 5 Sqn, Op Kipion in Oman; and Op Turus, providing humanitarian support in Ghana.
When he isn’t ‘holidaying’ in the sand, Steve enjoys being on the water, having participated in multiple Joint Service Adventurous Sail Training Centre expeditions and earning his Royal Yachting Association Day Skipper before joining the RAF Sailing Association racing team. He represented the RAF at interservice, national, and international events, including many trips to Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, France and a trip to Cork, Ireland. This culminated in a month-long trip sailing around Australia and included competing in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race in 2015, as part of exercise Transglobe.

After a short stint back at Boulmer, the National Air & Space Operations Centre at RAF High Wycombe, was the final stop. Here he was an integral part of a small team responsible for responding to UK air incidents. The role saw him acting as the single point of contact, collating, assessing, and disseminating time-critical information. During his tenure he implemented a variety of improvements to ways of working, alongside facilitating the introduction of new capabilities and a relocation to a new operational facility.
A self-professed geek, Steve is often found messing with technology or being the family tech support and after learning Python he helped build the RAF’s first in-house Santa Tracker; built a network data analysis tool for Defence Cyber Marvel 1; and participated in two Defence Hackathons.
To achieve his career segway, Steve was selected as one of only 250 candidates out of over 4500 applicants to complete a competitive SANS Upskill in Cyber programme, successfully attaining both the GFACT and GSEC certifications. He has also gained qualifications in AgilePM and ScrumMaster methodologies and is excited to get stuck in with the Cyber Division.
Steve now lives in Norfolk with his wife Louise, where they have just bought a house. He also enjoys casual photography, exploring and is hoping to get back out on the water soon.
Great to have you on the team Steve!
