It is our pleasure to welcome Ben Hawkins to our Collective Training Division as a combat air subject matter expert.
Ben joined the RAF in 1999 as a pilot. After completing tactical weapons training in Canada, he was streamed to fly the Tornado GR4 at RAF Lossiemouth, and shortly after qualifying flew his first op sorties over Iraq with 617 Sqn.
Returning as an instructor to XV(R) Sqn after his first tour, he taught WSOs and pilots before completing the Qualified Weapons Instructor (QWI) course in 2011. As a QWI, Ben returned to the frontline and flew sorties over Afghanistan.
Promoted in 2014, and posted to RAF Marham as a flight commander on II(AC) and 12(B) Sqns, he led some of the first sorties of the Tornado's return to Iraq and Syria, as well as completing his MSc in aerospace operations. Ben accrued over 2600 hours on Tornado before leaving the cockpit.
In 2016 Ben completed a year in the Falkland Islands at the British Forces HQ, accompanied with his family. Following this they moved to Spain, where he worked at the NATO CAOC in Torrejon as an attack planner, ATO writer and evaluator. Ben and his family returned to the UK in 2019, bringing with them plenty of stories to be told over a quiet drink!
Ben is married with two young children who currently take up most of his spare time, alongside the lengthy DIY list for the family home in Yorkshire. He’s a qualified civil pilot, scuba diver, skier and skydiver and will try his hand at anything, especially if it gets him outside.
Welcome to the Inzpire family, Ben!
